Volunteer Information

As a nonprofit organization, the Gresham Historical Society relies on volunteers. Volunteer hours add up – grants and federal and private funding can be dependent on volunteer hours; it’s a valuable alternative to making a donation. We also depend on volunteers to fill the following roles:

  • Docent/ Museum Greeter

The main task of docents/greeters is to interact with and serve as a point of contact for visitors. Docents may be given small tasks or light museum projects to work on during down time.

Docents/Greeters are expected to sign up for shifts of at least two hours.

  • Research Room Volunteer

Research Room volunteers help with a variety of tasks based on their skill sets and interests. They do not typically interact with visitors.  Current major research room projects include: registering books, archives, photographs, and objects in the collection; photographing collection items; digitizing our archives; and helping the Collections Manager research exhibits.

  • Membership Recruit

These volunteers work with the Membership Recruit chair to help increase and sustain our membership, and to help organize, set up, and clean up membership events.

  • Fundraising

These volunteers work with the Museum Coordinator to help come up with and execute fundraisers for the Society.

  • Tour Guide

These volunteers work with the President and Collections Manager to schedule and lead our guided walking tours.  Training will be provided, but tour guides are encouraged to develop their own unique style of presentation.

  • Write for the newsletter

Newsletter writers work with the newsletter editor and either propose or are assigned articles to write for the Historical Society’s quarterly newsletters.

  • Special events help

These volunteers are on-call to help organize, set up and tear down special events as needed.

If any of these tasks sound interesting to you...

The volunteer process is very easy!  Your first step is to fill out a volunteer form, available to download at the bottom of this page. You can also pick up a form in person by visiting us at the museum.  Mail or email it back to us once you have filled it out.  Next, we will schedule a time for you to come in and meet with the Museum Coordinator and Collections Manager. This meeting helps us gauge your skill set and what tasks you are interested in helping with. This is also an opportunity for you to ask us questions.

Finally, after the meeting, we will add you to the volunteer schedule.  Hours are always flexible, and we are happy to work with you to find a schedule that suits your needs. We will provide training on tasks you are unfamiliar with.

If you have any further questions, we would love to answer them!  Fill out the contact form, and we'll return your message within two business days.
